Tracking No Stranger & “Wicked Love” live at Sam’s

How Bekah Kelso & The Fellas Recorded NO STRANGER

[bandcamp width=350 height=600 album=2071818057 size=large bgcol=ffffff linkcol=0687f5 tracklist=true]

Recorded at Zinc Media, This project reflects one way of thinking towards production. Capture as much of the original performance as possible. For this we spent weeks rehearsing and performing these songs. Bekah’s previous albums had been recorded through a “Production Style” lens that allowed us to experiment with parts as they are being created and captured. Now it was up to the performers to have all those things embedded in the performance. The rhythm section, Keyboards, Bass, and Drums, were captured in a two-day session.

Our goal was to capture the moment with minimal, what we call, “ProTooling”. We wanted vibe, feel, and all those other intangible superlative qualities.

Tracking for the rhythm section was done 10/4 &10/5 2014. Since we knew what went where and why it was a matter of picking the best take.

Set up was done the day before tracking. Ryan(Drums) and I spent about 5 hours tweaking and tuning drums, placing and replacing microphones. Essential tools were masking tape and 3-In-One lubricant for rattles and squeaks. Bass drum had an EV RE-20  and snare had an Audix i5 (top)through Universal Audio’s  Apollo Unison Mic preamp using API Vision Channel Strip. Bottom snare had an Earthworks small diaphragm condenser. Toms had SM57’s. Hi-Hat had an Earthworks. Overheads were a matched pair of Ride NT5s in an X-Y configuration through a Langevin Dual Mono into an Avalon Vt 747sp Tube Compressor.

Keyboards(Ricky) and Bass(Damian) were recorded direct(D.I.). Keys went through Universal Audio’s 4-710D and the bass went through Universal Audio’s  Apollo Unison Mic preamp using their UA 610-B.

Even though we had Bekah isolated from the drums, the acoustic guitar proved troublesome to capture along with the vocal to our standards. We could have used the line output but we wanted the microphone sound. Any movement while recording caused frequency inconsistencies between the vocal and guitar mic. So, If I applied equalization to the guitar then the vocal would take that too introducing phasing and comb filtering. We felt the need for more control of the Vocals and Acoustic guitar so we decided to overdub. What was different about the overdubs was we were all in the same room “jamming and grooving” to Bekah’s performance as she was recording first the guitar then vocals. We didn’t plan on it. We didn’t say,”OK, you know what would make this awesome?” It just happened. I was facing the computer. We were all in headphones. I begin to feel Bekah’s already near flawless performance kick up a notch. When I turned around it seemed Ricky and Ryan were in their own world visualizing their parts and “feeling” the tracks. We all noticed and continued to oblige throughout the rest of vocal and guitar tracking. Maybe its nonsense but we can’t deny we all felt “it”. Vocal was recorded using  a Dave Pearlman TM-1 Tube Condenser Mic into Universal Audio’s 4110. Acoustic Guitar was tracked using an AKG 414 XLS also through the 4110.

We sang our harmonies together(Ricky,Ryan,Damian), again for vibe and feel. We were lightly isolated from each other so the minimal bleed didn’t let us use pitch correction which was something we wanted to avoid anyway. In this case, at the mix, I found the bleed actually helped “glue” the harmonies together. For harmonies we used Blue’s Baby Bottle, Neumann TLM 193 and AKG 414.

The album, No Stranger, was release February 27th at Sam’s burger joint in san Antonio,TX here’s video of “Wicked Love” featuring Dooley.

Gratitude December

You’ve made 2014 a fantastic year for Zinc Media!

I’ve had the pleasure of working with talented local artists spanning genres from country to reggae and will share their music as soon as it’s released. Thank you for your recent reviews and feedback. If you’d like to share some words you can do it here.

I have been writing a song a week for the last 47 weeks. My goal as set by the Soulwriters Songwriting group is 52 songs. The group reached their goal 3 weeks ago. I came in late to the game but have taken the challenge wholly. When I first started I wanted to “find the faucet”. What I’ve gotten out of it is the confidence to look any song in the eye and take it through the best of it’s possibilities. By no means am I an expert but this time the muse didn’t give me a fake phone number.

I asked for your vote for Bekah Kelso & The Fellas in the SA Current Music Awards and you delivered. We won Best Singer-Songwriter, Best Recording Engineer. Ricky, Ryan and I placed in the top 3 of our instrument categories. Thank You!

BKTF has been steamrolling SA’s music scene and is branching out. We’ve completed tracking for the upcoming Album “No Stranger”. CD release is expected mid February. You can expect a pre release online performance via www.concertwindow.com January 28th, 2015.

A special thanks to our “5th Members” without whom we could not make the magic we love to share with you.

Congratulations Mr. Jason A. Carter! We recently completed and released “Forever And A Day”, a 15 song journey through jazzy ragtime, country, bossa nova lead by a wonderful storyteller. This year I’ve had the pleasure of working on an album with Jason Carter III. We are nearing completion and last week we had, Hall-of-Fame Inductee, Bobby Flores laying down some of the most heartfelt fiddle. Also making a guest appearance on drums was Ryan Kelso. There are other guest vocal appearances in the works.  I can not wait to share.

New Gear New News

I’d like to share that Zinc Media recently acquired a live recording console/mixer. The Allen & Heath Qu-16. This unit is capable of mixing 22 channels of audio with high quality onboard processors. As first of it’s kind, it can record up to 18 separate channels of audio direct to a formatted USB hard drive. We also have the option of running it with ProTools HD.

I’m also pleased to announce that the Film that went to festival earlier this month was well received. “The Wisdom To Know The Difference” sold out it’s first showing at the Manhattan Film Festival and is scheduled for a second showing 7/3/14. This film will also be at the San Antonio Film Festival on August 3rd at CityBase Cinema.

On the music side, Bekah Kelso & The Fellas released a live video from a recent performance at 502Bar. The show was 75% unreleased material we are working up and getting ready for the studio later this summer. This one gem is from Bekah’s second release, “Departures”. Enjoy “Say Something”

Wisdom To Know The Difference – Feature Film

Wisdom Cred PosterLate last year I worked with Bauhaus Media Group mixing the feature film, The Wisdom to know the Difference. I was hired to mix the project but the opportunity to compose original music for several scenes came up and I welcomed the challenge. The movie is an Official Manhattan Film Festival selection and will show June 20th at the Quad Cinema. Written and Directed by Daniel Baldwin.

I wish everyone involved with this project the best of luck.

Song for Smash

This weekend Bekah Kelso was in recording a song for a special cause.

Set up was simple, AKG 414 for the Acoustic (Martin) and  Pearlman TM-1 for the vocal. Both were running through Universal Audio’s 4110 into UA Apollo. I used a UAD Fatso for monitoring, recording the clean signal at 24-bit 96k. Equalization was minimal. I used a healthy dose of Slate’s VTM on every track.

Wednesday Report

Today is the first of the last days. Audio Enginearing Institute is wrapping up it’s Audio 201 Advanced Studio Labs. This is the last course students are required to complete before going out into the world (Anyone looking for audio interns?).

Thanks to Bauhaus Media I’m turning in the last commercials for a credit union in South Florida. So far the count is 92 spots for tv and radio.

As for music, I am extremely thankful my friends want to make it.

I’m working on a cool jazzy unique project with Jason Carter III. Bekah Kelso and the Fellas are gearing up to record a new album. I’ve been writing a song a week for the last 12 weeks(personal or sbol). Seventythree Records is also finalizing a new release for 2014.

Thanks for listening!

M/S Mic’ing for Drums

With a simple kit set up, a simple mic set-up can be the most rewarding come mix time. The purpose here was to have these drums sound like a cohesive unit. The pattern was simple and as you can see so was the kit.

For the remainder of Bekah Kelso‘s new project I decided to go with a M/S set-up on Ryan Kelso’s great sounding Gretsch kit. A Nuemann TLM 193 cardioid(Mid) and a AKG 414 B-XLS in a figure 8(Side) I added Kick(AKG D112), Snare(Earthworks SR 30HC), Tom(Audix D4) for a little more definition.

This is the sum of all tracks. With a touch of EQ and Compression. The MS was decoded using Waves MS Matrix.

Polysynthfusion-Mastered

I had the pleasure of working on Polysynthfusion’s “NYC”, due to be released 10/13/12. This is an analog dream controlled by a theremin incited by Mike Randolph. The tracks focus on aspects of New York City life as well as some spoken word history tours through sonic landscapes.

In The Studio With Bekah Kelso

If you’re not familiar with Bekah Kelso then you haven’t heard one of the most talented performers(real) around. Take natural talent and  drive it with extensive gigging and you get a performer with laser sight acuity. On Bekah’s last recording, “Departures”, I prided the project on the fact that no pitch correction was used. It might seem careless if you believe at least a “safety” tuning pass is the least you can do to a vocal performance. Bends, vibratos, expressive formant tonality, etc. are, to me, what makes a performance. So again we tracked relatively quickly and let the song tell us where to go.

We took that approach further on the 4 out of the 10 possible songs we started with and decided to work on. We had limited time as Bekah was getting ready to make a big move out of Texas to Seattle. We will continue to forge this project through online collaboration and wrap up in May.

First we recorded “demo” takes (Guitar/Vocal/Click) to about 10 ideas Bekah has been looking for the right time and place to bring into this world. We narrowed it down to 4 songs we fastidiously worked, sculpted, rearranged, manipulated and tracked. We started by adding Bass guitar. After the initial “guide” take I decided to lower the click and feel the original acoustic guitar/vocal take. That gave us a fluidity that can easily be lost or edited out of music. We kept throwing around the idea,”This is what we do.” and suddenly most first takes were right where they needed to be. That wasn’t the case for all tracks but it sure made the aggregated tracks jump and move.

I tried to maintain the flow of one song at a time but if at some point the “feeling” was absent we’d listen to another and if that caught our vibe we’d attack and conquer. After the bass was complete we now had a foundation of groove. Bass against guitar. We’d then track “keeper” acoustic takes and replace the guides. There’ was no real plan or list to follow. It was really based on the vibe or feel we were attuned to and inject as much as possible to the recording of the performance. As chaotic as it might seem there was a calmness about what we were doing that led to some magic and confidence in our decisions. Totally worth it.

We then would move on to electric guitars and other instruments.

The Electric guitar was tracked using a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe and a G&L semi-hollow ASAT mic’d with either and AKG C414B or a Samson VR88(same as “Departures”) depending on what the song called for. We layered some percussion tracks also recorded with the 414. by this time the click was muted and they started to feel like complete songs.

We moved on to Vocals using a Neumann TLM 193 through Universal Audio’s 4110. This combo caught the airy, harmonically appealing, breathiness of Bekah’s voice while maintaing a natural tone. On the last day we both decided that one song in particular was not ready for vocals or just wasn’t matching up to the other songs so with ruthless empirical zeal we scrapped it and reworked, arranged and tracked a completely new song. Talk about magic. In a matter of hours 2 counter point Acoustic Guitars, Bass, were ready for final Vocals and with in a few takes the song was now ready to move forward.

We will track drums when all other songs have been pre-produced and rehearsed to the rough mixes. Ryan Kelso will pull drum duties while Marty Barrera will add more percussion. I am excited about the prospects this project holds in store for us. Stay tuned and please check out Bekah Kelso
